Is Your Home Making You Sick? One Solution That Can Help: Indoor Plants
A study carried out by NASA, has shown that some indoor plants can significantly improve the quality of the air in our homes, by assisting in the absorption of noxious chemicals from the surrounding environment.
Our modern, new homes are built to be wonderfully airtight. However, is the air in our homes safe for us to breathe? Granted, it’s lovely to think that we can keep warm in the winter, and cool in the summer, as well as live in a more energy efficient environment. The problem is that many building materials used today, plus the furnishings we buy to make our home beautiful, may be giving off toxic fumes, that could be compromising our immune system. Some of the symptoms individuals may experience, include respiratory problems, headaches, dizziness, inability to concentrate and colds, to name just a few. The effects of indoor air pollution may possibly even be linked to some types of depression.
I’m sure you have experienced that smell when you’ve bought, for example, a new piece of furniture, or had new carpet laid. Or how about that smell when you bring those clean clothes home from the dry cleaners?
One of the easiest solutions that can help to improve indoor air quality is to introduce some indoor plants into the home. Indoor plants can assist in absorbing many common toxins that can be found in the home, such as formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide.
Indoor Plants For Improving The Air Indoors
There are a number of indoor plants that can help to reduce air pollution. Here are a few of my favorites:
• Peace Lily. This is one of my favorite indoor plants. When my son was born, I was given one, and I am happy to say that nearly 9 years on, it still looks beautiful
.
• Areca Palms. This is another indoor plant that looks good, but make sure to nurture it, as it does like plenty of TLC.
• Chinese Evergreen. A very durable plant that can withstand a fair amount of mishandling, and still survive. It copes very well in low light areas.
• Pachira Aquatica, also known as a ‘Money Tree’. As the name suggests, in Chinese feng shui, it is associated with good luck. This plant is also very durable.
• Gerbera Daisy. I think gerbera daisies are so vibrant, and can brighten up any home. It’s great to know that they are also highly effective at improving the quality of our air indoors.
• Chrysanthemums. Another colorful plant that looks good, as well as being highly beneficial for a healthy home.
TED presenter, Kamal Meattle talks about how he successfully improved his health by introducing indoor plants into his office environment. This short video provides simple guidelines for introducing these plants into your home, so that they do their job effectively.
Indoor plants can look great in the home, adding life and color to any room. However, most importantly, they can assist in eliminating toxic chemicals from your home, improving the health of you and your love ones.
